Glide silently through papyrus channels by dugout canoe and track big game on foot in one of Africa's last true wildernesses.

The Okavango Delta is Africa's great paradox: a river that never reaches the sea, fanning out across the Kalahari into a maze of lagoons, palm islands and floodplains that swell each year with floodwater from the Angolan highlands. This trip puts you at the heart of it, based at classic tented camps reachable only by light aircraft, where elephant and buffalo wade past your deck and the days move at the pace of the water itself.

Mornings are spent gliding between reed channels in a mokoro, poled by a local guide who reads the delta like a map, spotting red lechwe, fish eagles and the occasional submerged hippo before you've seen a ripple. Afternoons switch to open 4x4 game drives and walking safaris on the drier islands, tracking lion and wild dog with guides who grew up in these channels. It suits travellers who want their Africa unhurried, intimate and genuinely remote.
