There is no vehicle, no fence and no guarantee. Tracking desert-adapted black rhino on foot across Namibia's Damaraland is the most humbling wildlife encounter we know.

You set out at first light with a community tracker who reads three-day-old prints in the gravel like a newspaper. The landscape is vast and ochre, broken only by welwitschia plants older than most cities.

When you finally crest a rise and see a rhino browsing two hundred metres downwind, the silence is total. You watch, you photograph, you back away — the animal never knows you were there.

The trackers are employed by the same conservancies that protect these rhino from poaching, so every booking funds the patrols. It is conservation you can feel under your boots.

Good to know

  • Trek on foot with a community tracker; distance and success vary with the wind and the rhino.
  • Go in the cooler dawn hours and carry water, sun cover and boots that grip the gravel.
  • Book through a conservancy so your fee funds the anti-poaching patrols.

Itinerary

Fly from Windhoek to a desert airstrip and transfer to a remote lodge on the edge of Damaraland's gravel plains.

Set out on foot each morning with expert trackers following fresh spoor of desert-adapted black rhino across dry riverbeds.

Full-day excursion to petrified forest sites and ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, with an evening game drive.

Final dawn tracking walk, then transfer back to the airstrip for the return flight.
