Past the souks
The medina's souks are a glorious assault — spice pyramids, hammered lanterns, the call to prayer over it all — but Marrakech reveals its softer self the moment you step off the main drag. Duck through an unmarked door and a riad opens into a cool, tiled courtyard with an orange tree and a fountain, the noise of the city suddenly a rumour.
Stay in one and the rhythm of the city changes: mint tea on the roof at dusk, breakfast of msemen and honey in the shade, the crowds only a choice away.
Quiet corners to find
- The Jardin Majorelle and the smaller, calmer Le Jardin Secret in the medina.
- A hammam scrub-and-steam, the local reset that no spa abroad matches.
- The Palmeraie at dusk, palm groves gold in the last light beyond the walls.
Bargain hard but kindly, get pleasantly lost, and always accept the tea. Marrakech is loud where it wants to be and serene where you least expect it — the trick is knowing when to step through the door.
