Finding the quiet beaches of the Algarve

Secluded golden-sand cove beneath tall Algarve limestone cliffs
Location Algarve, Portugal
Duration 5 days
Price $1,340
Group size self-drive
Tour type Coastal beach escape
Difficulty Easy
Rating 4.7

The Algarve's postcard coves get all the attention, but step west of the resorts and Portugal's south coast turns wild — empty surf beaches backed by cliffs and a single shack selling grilled fish.

The Costa Vicentina, a protected stretch running up the Atlantic-facing west, is where locals go. The water is colder and the swell bigger, but the beaches are vast and often deserted.

Base yourself in a low-key town like Sagres or Aljezur, walk a section of the Rota Vicentina clifftop trail, and time your beach days around the tide for the biggest swathes of sand.

Go in June or September for warm water and thin crowds; August belongs to the families and the car parks fill by ten.
