Cross the world's largest salt flat by 4x4 and climb into the high-desert Altiplano's coloured lagoons.

Salar de Uyuni is 10,000 square kilometres of blinding white salt crust, and after rain it turns into the world's largest mirror, doubling the sky underfoot. This overland trip crosses the salar by 4x4 with a local driver-guide, stopping at the cactus-covered Isla Incahuasi and the old train cemetery outside Uyuni town, before climbing into the Altiplano's volcanic backcountry.

Beyond the salt flat, the route runs through Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve — red and green lagoons stained by algae and minerals, flamingo colonies at 4,500 metres, geysers venting at dawn, and the Dalí Desert's wind-sculpted rock formations. Nights are spent in simple salt-brick and stone lodges at altitude; the cold is real, but the star-filled skies over the salar are unlike anywhere else on the trip circuit.
